Description
The Working at Heights Course allows students to gain a sound understanding of the legal requirements for safely working at heights outlined in Australian Standards, Codes of Practice, and various state regulations. The course is based upon the national competency standards accredited by state and national Training Authorities.
This course is recommended for:
- Riggers & scaffolders
- Entertainment/events workers
- Arborists
- Maintenance workers
- General construction workers
- Roofers
- Other persons whose job role involves carrying out work at heights
Course content is customised to be specific to the students' job role or workplace, and includes selection of appropriate equipment accordingly. Hazard identification and risk analysis are core components of the course.
This course may include some or all of the following delivery modes: classroom, online/eLearning, workplace or blended options.

Course Content
This course includes both theory and practical components. Topics covered in each component are outlined below.
Course Content - Theory:
• What are the Regulations, Codes of Practice and Standards that determine how you should carry out work at heights?
• How can we identify fall hazards and determine risk level?
• What are the categories of height protection equipment we can use to control fall hazards?
• How can we safely and correctly set up height protection equipment?
• What hazards may be associated with the equipment being used?
• What are some typical hazard controls used when working at heights?
• How can we inspect, select, care for and maintain safety equipment?
Course Content - Practical:
• Carry out Hazard Identification (including a Site Audit if required).
• Conduct a Safety Analysis.
• Identify appropriate solutions/techniques to control fall risks.
• Select, inspect and safely use height work equipment such as fall-arrest harnesses.
The practical component of this course is carried out in a specifically selected and protected environment.
Pre-requisites
There are no pre-requisite qualifications for this course.
You must be at least 18 years old to complete this qualification.
If work is being conducted in the construction industry, you may need to include a White Card (Construction Induction) course extension into the training program - contact us for more information.
Language and Other Student Requirements
Students must be at least 18 years old to complete this course.
Assessment activities must all be conducted whilst communicating in English, and interpreters are not allowed to be used. Students require a reasonable command of English and basic numeracy skills to complete the assessment tool for this course. Only minor adjustments for personal or workplace reasons are allowed.
Hearing impaired persons may use sign language to communicate via an interpreter (only when approved by the Regulator).
The course may involve some manual handling, climbing, lifting, carrying, and height work. It must be clearly understood that some disabilities may preclude a student from participating safely, and this may restrict entry to the course. For details and alternatives, please refer to AITAC administrator for advice.
While we will make every effort to cater to the specific needs of students, decisions relating to safety are not subject to negotiation.
PPE Requirements – what to bring on the day
This course may involve working in a warehouse, construction or outdoor environment, and performing High Risk Work. Students are therefore required to wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during training.
When attending the course, students must bring/wear:
- Fully enclosed shoes or boots (steel-capped safety shoes recommended)
- Drill shirt and pants (full cover – ankle to wrist)
We will provide hi-vis vests, books, pens, tools and other resources needed for the course.
Students who do not have the appropriate PPE will not be permitted to participate in the practical component of the course and may have to be rescheduled at another available time. This may incur additional fees (please refer to the Student Handbook for specific fee details).
Training which takes place in the workplace under supervision may require different or additional PPE dependent upon the site rules and procedures. If this is the case, requirements should be discussed with your employer/supervisor.
Course Duration & Location
The nominal duration of this course is 1 day (8 hours), however course duration may vary depending upon the practical solutions being developed as applicable to your workplace or job role. Study may also include pre-course learning activities.
The course is delivered at 15 Barrie Rd, Tullamarine VIC, or can be delivered at other suitable workplaces by arrangement.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, you will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment with the relevant Units of Competency.
