Heavy Rigid Truck Licence Course

The Heavy Rigid Truck Licence Course is designed for those personnel who wish to upgrade their car/truck driver licence to cover heavy rigid vehicle operations.
Heavy rigid vehicles include:
- Rigid vehicle, not being an unladen prime mover, with a minimum of three axles and a minimum 15 tonnes GVM.
- Modified three axle prime movers with a certified detachable tray (with capacity to carry 75% of their specified GVM) with a GVM of 15 tonnes that hold dual registration (HC & HR).
- Three axle articulated buses.
- Three axle buses above 15 tonnes GVM.
Throughout this course you will learn how to control all vehicle functions, monitor road conditions, manage vehicle condition and performance, and deal with hazardous situations. You will also learn how to complete tasks associated with vehicle operations, such as processing work documents, securing loads, navigation and route planning, and trailer inspection.
This course may include some or all of the following delivery modes: classroom, online/eLearning, workplace or blended options.
Assessment requires a reasonable command of English and basic numeracy skills.
You must hold a lower level vehicle licence to complete this course. This could include a car or lower level truck licence.
Students must be at least 18 years old to obtain this licence.
Assessment activities must all be conducted whilst communicating in English, and interpreters are not allowed to be used. Students require a reasonable command of English and basic numeracy skills to complete the government-mandated assessment tool for this course. Only minor adjustments for personal or workplace reasons are allowed.
Hearing impaired persons may use sign language to communicate via an interpreter (only when approved by the Regulator).
The course may involve some manual handling, climbing, lifting, carrying, and other physical work. It must be clearly understood that some disabilities may preclude a student from participating safely, and this may restrict entry to the course. For details and alternatives, please refer to AITAC administrator for advice.
While we will make every effort to cater to the specific needs of students, decisions relating to safety are not subject to negotiation.
This course may involve working in a warehouse, construction or outdoor environment, and performing High Risk Work. Students are therefore required to wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during training.
When attending the course, students must bring/wear:
- Fully enclosed shoes or boots (steel-capped safety shoes recommended)
- Drill shirt and pants (full cover – ankle to wrist)
We will provide hi-vis vests, books, pens, tools and other resources needed for the course.
Students who do not have the appropriate PPE will not be permitted to participate in the practical component of the course and may have to be rescheduled at another available time. This may incur additional fees (please refer to the Student Handbook for specific fee details).
Training which takes place in the workplace under supervision may require different or additional PPE dependent upon the site rules and procedures. If this is the case, requirements should be discussed with your employer/supervisor.
The duration of this course is 2 days. Study may also include pre-course learning activities.
The course can be delivered at suitable workplaces by arrangement.
On successful completion of this course, you will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment with the relevant Units of Competency.
You will be able to sit the theory and practical tests set by the Regulator to attain formal heavy vehicle licence.
