Description
MSMBLIC001 Licence to operate a Standard Boiler is a comprehensive course suitable for personnel who require a High Risk Work Licence to carry out specific boiler operation work.
This course is suitable for personnel working within engineering, manufacturing and power supply industries.
The course is competency based, and successful applicants who attain the necessary competence will be eligible to apply for the issue of a National Licence through the local Regulator or Worksafe Authority. It is nationally accredited and recognised, and typically requires approximately 60 hours of training.
This course may include some or all of the following delivery modes: classroom, online/eLearning, workplace or blended options.
Assessment is conducted using the mandated assessment tool set by the Regulator, which requires a reasonable command of English and basic numeracy skills.
Course Content
This course includes both theory and practical components. Each component will cover the following topics:

- Different fuel types and their characteristics
- Identification and control of workplace hazards
- Standard operating procedures
- Principles and methods for boiler operation
- Boiler inspection, fault diagnosis and maintenance

- Laws and Regulations which apply to your work

- Start up and shut down procedures
- Monitoring the job and work area
- Communication channels & protocols
- Handover operations
Pre-requisites
There are no pre-requisite qualifications for this course.
You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a High Risk Work Licence.
Assessment is conducted using the mandated assessment tool set by the Regulator, which requires a reasonable command of English and basic numeracy skills.
Language and Other Student Requirements
Students must be at least 18 years old to obtain this licence.
Assessment activities must all be conducted whilst communicating in English, and interpreters are not allowed to be used. Students require a reasonable command of English and basic numeracy skills to complete the government-mandated assessment tool for this course. Only minor adjustments for personal or workplace reasons are allowed.
Hearing impaired persons may use sign language to communicate via an interpreter (only when approved by the Regulator).
The course may involve some manual handling, climbing, lifting, carrying, and height work. It must be clearly understood that some disabilities may preclude a student from participating safely, and this may restrict entry to the course. For details and alternatives, please refer to AITAC administrator for advice.
While we will make every effort to cater to the specific needs of students, decisions relating to safety are not subject to negotiation.
PPE Requirements – what to bring on the day
This course may involve working in a warehouse, construction or outdoor environment, and performing High Risk Work. Students are therefore required to wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during training.
When attending the course, students must bring/wear:
- Fully enclosed shoes or boots (steel-capped safety shoes recommended)
- Drill shirt and pants (full cover – ankle to wrist)
We will provide hi-vis vests, books, pens, tools and other resources needed for the course.
Students who do not have the appropriate PPE will not be permitted to participate in the practical component of the course and may have to be rescheduled at another available time. This may incur additional fees (please refer to the Student Handbook for specific fee details).
Training which takes place in the workplace under supervision may require different or additional PPE dependent upon the site rules and procedures. If this is the case, requirements should be discussed with your employer/supervisor.
Course Location & Duration
The duration of this course is 5 days. Study may also include pre-course learning activities.
The course is delivered at 9 Snyder Court, Tullamarine VIC, or can be delivered at other suitable workplaces by arrangement.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, you will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment with the relevant Units of Competency.
You will be able to apply for a nationally recognised High Risk Work Licence from a state regulator. During this process, you will be required to pay an additional government licensing fee of $50 – $100.
Course Fees
The standard price for this course is $2750.00 paid in two instalments:
- $1600 Training Fee is paid upon booking; and
- $1150 Assessment Fee is due upon course commencement.
